IT'S FINALLY FINISHED!! The first thing I did today was paint the blurs on the right leg. I darkened the shoe blurs of the left leg to give the painting a bit more intensity. It also made the movement of the legs more obvious. I tried to make the legs still pop out from the blurs though by touching up on the calves. Next, I moved on to painting the ballet shoes in the middle. At first, I had some difficulty with getting the shoes to actually appear dimensional with the shadows and highlights. I wanted to make the highlight really strong since I envisioned that the light source would be coming from the center. The bottom of the shoe had to be dark to show the contrast between the highlight and the shadow, but I then realized I needed to blend it out more to make it more neat. As for the shoe in the back, I wanted to make it a bit darker to give depth to the painting. The colors look washed out in this photo, but in real life I think that the difference between the two ballet shoes is more noticeable. One issue I do have with the back shoe is that I think I made it too small. I feel like the heel of the shoe is too pointy, and not rounded. I also would should have made the bottom of the front shoe straighter towards the heel.
As for the finishing touches, I just quickly painted the floor. I decided to do this grayish brown color because I wanted to mix up the color palette of my painting. I think it also makes the legs and shoes pop, making them look brighter and not as dull. I added reflections of the shoes by going in with short white paint strokes. I then blurred those out with my finger. Finally, I added the shadows, making sure that it went from dark black to a softer, more muted black that faded out. Personally, I think that shadow really makes the shoes come life. I definitely could work more on this project for touch-ups, but I'm suprised, in a good way, but how it has turned out!
