To finish off the year, we were given a very short weeklong project of painting a still life. I really enjoyed doing this painting because I was able to learn how to paint different textures and materials. At first I was worried about painting glass, but I learned that with thin layers, you would be able to get the see-through effect. Although we painted from actual observation, I still think that we were given room to express ourselves with the palette of the colors. I am very pleased with the background because I think it breaks up the neutral tones of the objects and gives more life. Also I think that by gradating the color, it gave the painting more depth and dimension. However in the first picture you can tell that initially the bottom of the table cloth was extremely off in terms of color. Because I was rushing to get it finished, the color is way too gray and cool-toned. So today, I went back in to try and corrected the color. I tried to make sure that the shade of brown was similar to the shadows of the objects. I think it is certainly a lot better now. Overall, I am really happy with this short project and like the feel of my painting. Next time though, I really want to try a different technique and use even more water when I paint.
